How to set up a kitchen display and route orders in WalnutPOS

By Tahseen Dar, founderPublished 3:07 video

The short answer

In the back office, open Kitchen Stations, create a station for each part of your kitchen, and pick the categories it makes. Open KDS on the kitchen's screen, and orders you save at the till land there by themselves, ready for your team to move from new to done.

On the £0 plan you get 1 kitchen station. Make it Everything else and every order reaches the one screen. A second station, like the Bar in the video, needs Advanced, which removes the limit. See every limit

Step by step

Everything said in the video, chapter by chapter. Each time opens the video at that moment on YouTube.

0:00By the end of this video, orders from your till will appear on a kitchen screen, sent to the right station, and your team will move them from new to done.

Set up kitchen stations

0:18In the back office, open Kitchen Stations, and tap Create your first station. Call this one Bar. It gets a colour of its own. Leave Only some categories on, and tap what the bar makes. Here, that's cocktails, wines and coffees.

0:37On the right, you can see the items the bar will get. Tap Create station. The strip at the top counts the categories that have no station yet. Add one more station for them. Call it Kitchen, and choose Everything else. It gets whatever the bar doesn't make.

1:01Now every category goes to a station. On the Free plan, you get one kitchen station. Advanced removes that limit.

Open the kitchen display

1:13On the kitchen's screen, open the till, and tap KDS at the top. Check that it says live. That means new orders appear by themselves. Tickets move from left to right: new, acknowledged, cooking, and ready.

Send an order from the till

1:32At the till, start a dine-in order for table three. Add a burger and a Mai Tai. Tap Save. The order goes straight to the kitchen. There it is, in the New lane, with the table and how long it's been waiting.

One station at a time

1:56Choose Bar from the station list. You see every ticket with something for the bar. Choose Kitchen. Table five only ordered drinks, so its ticket isn't here. Switch back to all stations.

From new to done

2:16Tap Acknowledge to say you've seen it. When you start on it, tap Start cooking. Tap an item to tick it off when it's ready. Here, the Mai Tai. When everything's done, tap Mark ready. Once it's served, tap Complete. Finished tickets move to the Done tab.

Recap

2:36To recap. Create a station for each part of your kitchen, and pick the categories it makes. Open KDS on the kitchen's screen. Orders you save at the till land there by themselves, and your team moves them from new to done.
